PROGRAMME NOTES
George F Handel - Arrival of the Queen of Sheba

This busy Sinfonia for two oboes and strings opens the third Act of Handel's oratorio Solomon (1748) and heralds the arrival of King Solomon's eagerly awaited guest. In an earlier three-movement version of the piece it closes with a brief Adagio, which we have used as a link into track 5.

The words for this oratorio are based on the books of Kings and Chronicles and the work is about Solomon’s greatness and wisdom. This short, orchestral piece features two oboes that herald the arrival of Queen Sheba. It is now one of the top choices for a church wedding and often heralds the brides arrival.
