Nick began his musical development as a violinist,
but in time it became apparent that he was destined to be a blower rather
than a scraper. Having begun his oboe tuition with Susan Peel at Marlborough
College in 1984, he was able to continue his studies with Helena Gaunt
at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama, whilst studying for a Music
degree at The City University in London. Following a performance of the
R.Strauss Oboe Concerto with the University Orchestra, Nick was awarded
a scholarship to study for a further year, gaining an ARCM in oboe performance
along the way.
In 1989 he won the Bath Young Musician of the Year competition,
and as part of the prize he and his brother Tim gave a recital in the
Aix-en-Provence
Music Festival in 1991. They still occasionally give performances together.
Nick
is currently principal oboe with The Corinthian Chamber Orchestra and
The Salomon Orchestra, and also plays regularly with a large number
of the other London and SE amateur orchestras, including Chelsea Opera
Group and Forest Philharmonic. Nick also performed the William Alwyn
Oboe Concerto with The Lawyers Orchestra in March 1999. By day he is
a software
developer for root6 Technology Ltd. |
